Here are some highlights from the many films being shown at Abbeydale Picture House!
Desolation Center
Kicking of the proceedings in style is the UK premiere of the documentary Desolation Center. A film which reveals the untold story of a series of Reagan-era guerrilla desert happenings, which are now recognised as the inspiration for festivals such as Burning Man and Lollapalooza. Directed by Stuart Swezey, the creator and principle organiser of these unique pilgrimages into the Californian desert, the documentary shows how the risky and sometimes reckless actions of a few outsiders frustrated with mainstream society, can unintentionally lead to seismic cultural shifts. Featuring exclusive never-before-seen archival video, live audio recordings, and interviews which include the likes of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic and more, this is an event not to be missed! Not to mention that the screening will be followed by a performance from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore.

Tranny Fag + Performance
Following its theatrical premiere at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival where it picked up a Teddy Award for best LGBTQ themed documentary film, we are honoured to be screening Claudia Priscilla and Kika Goifman’s Tranny Fag. Set in Brazil, the film is a candid profile of São Paulo pop star Linn de Quebrada, a transgender musician and activist whose tactics for confronting homophobia and transphobia include performing in the nude. We cannot recommend this intimate and heartfelt documentary enough! The screening will be followed by a special live performance from Linn and friends.
Join us for this vibrant night of queer cinema and contemporary Brazilian electro-funk.

Tanzania Transit + uSista Live
A compelling documentary film which presents a rolling microcosm of East African society. Directed by Jeroen van Velzen the film is centred around a typical train journey and follows three characters in transit. Rukia, an entrepreneurial woman, travels second class. Isaya, a charismatic old Masai, sits with grandson William, in the train’s poorest part, while Peter, a preacher, travels first class. Each person’s story reveals rich insights into the struggles endured and hardship overcome in a society governed by poverty and prejudice.
To really immerse yourself, get in the mood and engage all the senses be sure to join the uSista crew before and after the screening for Tanzanian food, music, VR…and even a game of Swahili bingo!!
