The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974) and Nightmare City (1980)

This coming Halloween weekend… Reel Steel present a ‘radioactive’ Zombie double-bill screening; The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974), alongside Nightmare City (1980).

A strange twist of fate brings two young travellers to a small town where an experimental agriculture machine – which uses radiation to kill pests – may be bringing the dead back to life.

As zombies infest the area and attack the living, a stubborn detective thinks the couple are Satanists responsible for the local killings. Now having to fight for their lives, and prove their innocence, they try and stop the impending zombie apocalypse.

The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (also known as Let Sleeping Corpses Lie) is a gory horror tale from Spanish director Jorge Grau, and widely considered to be one of the best zombie films ever made.

Then… long before zombies took up running in 28 Days Later, they were chasing down victims in director Umberto Lenzi’s utterly insane living-dead opus – Nightmare City (1980).

As news reports come in of a radiation leak at a nuclear power station, a military plane makes an unscheduled landing at an airport. With no communication from the crew inside, upon forcing the aircraft doors open, the waiting soldiers get a nasty shock when out bursts a horde of flesh-hungry radioactive ghouls.

As the infection and chaos quickly spreads, the authorities struggle to maintain control, in this zombie film experience like no other.

Starring the one and only Hugo Stiglitz (who Quentin Tarantino named a character after in his film Inglorious Basterds), and labelled as one of the infamous ‘Video Nasties’ of the 1980s, Nightmare City (also known as City of the Walking Dead) is a bonkers slice of Italian zombie carnage… and probably the only film where you’ll see a zombie use a harpoon gun.

This screening has an 18 certificate – entry will not be permitted to anyone (including ticket holders) below this age.

Due to renovation building work taking place in the Abbeydale Picture House auditorium, this screening will take place in the venue’s Fly Tower Cinema. This cinema space is not wheelchair accessible. Booking in advance is recommended.
